BirdSafe® by Thompson Innovative Glass utilizes Glass Coatings & Concepts’ latest innovation, Surface 1. This line of ceramic glass enamels allows visual markers to be placed on Surface 1, which is recognized through testing to be the most effective bird / glass deterrent1. This ceramic enamel is a permanent coating of engineered ceramics and inorganic pigments. It is highly durable and resistant to UV and outdoor elements. Thompson applies this product directly to the glass via its state-of-the-art screen-printing technology.
BirdSafe meets the prescriptive rating guidelines of bird-friendly glass as developed by the American Bird Conservancy by following the 2×2 Rule or the 2×4 Rule for pattern locations, glass types and orientation of Low-E coatings. When certain requirements are met, the adherence to these rules allows bird-friendly threat factor ratings to be achieved2. Thompson uses its standard patterns or custom patterns supplied via a digital file from the customer.

What makes Thompson BirdSafe® different from other bird-friendly glass options?
Thompson BirdSafe® uses a durable ceramic enamel applied directly to Surface 1 of the glass using Thompson Innovative Glass’s advanced screen-printing technology. The visible markers help birds recognize the glass as a barrier while providing architects with a proven, permanent bird-friendly solution.
Does Thompson BirdSafe® meet bird-friendly glazing requirements?
BirdSafe® can meet the prescriptive guidelines for bird-friendly glazing developed by the American Bird Conservancy when the appropriate glass, pattern, spacing, and Low-E coating orientation requirements are followed. Available patterns can achieve Threat Factor ratings as low as 20. Local codes and project requirements should always be reviewed when specifying bird-friendly glazing.
Can Thompson BirdSafe® patterns be customized?
Yes. In addition to Thompson’s standard dot and line patterns, custom patterns can be created from customer-supplied digital artwork. As a full-service fabricator, Thompson can also incorporate BirdSafe® into glazing configurations designed to meet additional project requirements for energy performance, safety, security, privacy, and other applications.
