School Security Glass
SchoolDefender is our solution for schools and institutions. Featuring protective glass with all of the characteristics of traditional glazing but also with a strong safety approach.
School Security glass from our Defender line offers a clear view of the outside while protecting those inside.
The glass used in schools for security is an essential ingredient in the mission to provide a safe environment. As the desired level of security threat varies by the school, it is common to use a mix of bullet-resistant glass and forced entry glass products to support security requirements in different areas of the school building. In addition to bullet-resistant glass and forced entry glass, ASTM F3561 was developed in response to the growing concerns around school safety, particularly in the wake of violent incidents like school shootings and other forms of intrusion.
The primary goal is to create a secure barrier while maintaining visibility and natural light in classrooms and common areas. School security glass has several additional features that contribute to the overall safety and security of the school environment including the ability to maintain visibility and natural light and meet energy codes and standards with high performance glass.

Defender School Security Glass Overview
Defender school security glass can be manufactured to meet ASTM F3561 when used in an approved system. Design options include tints, Low-E’s, reflectives, decorative, and specialty glass. In addition, Thompson Innovative Glass has been active within the National Glass Association task groups including those that created the new test method for forced-entry-resistance of fenestration systems and several other technical documents in this space. The ASTM F3561 active shooter glass testing process involves pre-weakening the glazing with 10-gun shots using an AR-15 rifle loaded with 5.56 M193 bullets, followed by escalating impacts delivered by a 100-lb torpedo-shaped impactor. This is not a ballistic resistance test as the bullets are used to pre-weaken the glass and are expected to pass through.

Benefits for Schools
Increased Safety
Security glass offers peace of mind to teachers, students, and parents by providing a physical barrier that makes it much more difficult for intruders to gain access.
Cost-Effective Security
While more expensive than regular glass, security glass is a long-term investment in school safety. It requires little maintenance once installed and can be integrated with other security systems like locks and alarms.
Improved Learning Environment
Security glass ensures safety without compromising on the open, welcoming atmosphere that windows provide, promoting both a secure and positive learning environment.
Frequently Asked Questions: School Security Glass & Glazing
What is school security glass?
School security glass is a type of reinforced glass designed to enhance the safety of educational facilities. It provides protection against forced entry, vandalism, and ballistic threats, helping to secure students, staff, and teachers.
How does school security glass work?
School security glass typically features laminated layers of glass and polycarbonate materials. These layers absorb and disperse impact forces, making it resistant to shattering, penetration, or breaking under repeated attack.
Is school security glass bulletproof?
No glass is entirely bulletproof. However, school security glass can be ballistic-resistant, (we hve options in our Defender series) meaning it is designed to withstand certain calibers of bullets based on industry-rated standards.
Why is school security glass important?
Schools are increasingly targeted for break-ins, vandalism, and other threats. Security glass acts as a critical first line of defense, delaying or deterring intruders and giving occupants time to respond or evacuate.
What standards does school security glass meet?
School security glass is often tested to meet standards such as:
ASTM F1233 for forced entry resistance.
ASTM F3561 Standard Test Method for Forced-Entry Resistance of Systems after Simulated Active Shooter Attack serves as the minimum industry-accepted standard for security glazing for schools.
UL 752 for bullet resistance.
NIJ (National Institute of Justice) standards for ballistic protection.
Can school security glass be retrofitted into existing buildings?
Yes, security glass can often be installed into existing frames. However, some retrofits may require structural modifications for optimal performance.
How does security glass balance safety and aesthetics?
Modern security glass is designed to maintain clear visibility and natural light while offering high levels of protection. High performance coatings, bird friendly, and decorative touches can also be applied to blend seamlessly with school design.
Is security glass energy-efficient?
Yes. Many security glass products include energy-efficient features like low-E coatings or insulated glass units, providing thermal performance alongside security.
How long does security glass last?
With proper maintenance, security glass can last decades. Regular inspections ensure the integrity of the glass and framing system over time.
Does school security glass prevent active shooter incidents?
While no single product can entirely prevent an active shooter incident, school security glass is a critical component of a broader security strategy. It delays entry, increases response time, and helps protect lives during emergencies.
Are there government incentives for installing school security glass?
Some states and local governments offer grants or funding programs for school security improvements, including the installation of security glass. Check with local authorities or security consultants for available resources.
